My job as an editor is the best job I've ever had! No kidding. Yes, it's always working to deadline; yes, it's a worry that you're handling someone's "baby"; yes, it's an absolute thrill when an author finals or wins a writing contest.
There are times when it feels like if you see another comma, you'll scream! But that's not the every day. The every day is a chance to read some incredible fiction, work with creative people who tell amazing stories and inspire you.
One memory that keeps me on the straight and narrow when it's tempting to "play" instead of work is of my husband sending me an online game. Great...but I was working on a huge manuscript -- like 400 pages. It was fantastic, but I was only midstream. When hubby got home, he insisted I open the game -- I'd have so much fun, take a break for a few minutes, clear my mind and go back refreshed -- all the regular temptations. So...I did. And it was a cute game, but when I went back to work, the manuscript was gone. Vanished, as if it had never existed! I think my heart rate went from resting to absolute outrun-the-scary-monsters rate in 1.4 seconds. I told my husband it was a good time not to be in the same room...for some reason, no arguments -- he took one look at the desperation and was out of there!
I found the manuscript. Nothing had been lost, which was a very good thing!! But the most adventurous I get with games now is FreeCell.
