I’ve been agonizing over my third book for quite some time, making exceedingly little progress since Recruit’s release last year. Going through all my notes and ideas for the key events that need to take place merely made the gears in my brain to squeal and eventually grind to a halt. They all seemed to clash against each other, rather than falling into place in a timeline of some sort.
Then I realized I was tring to plot three separate novels. I had plots and conflicts strong enough to support three distinct novels.
1) The Lin and Gareth love interest--could be a genre historical novel quite easily. Remember the sparks between them in Recruit?
2) As Lin progresses as a soldier, she gains a command of a small fortress-- Baedd hen Dunn (Badon). Her conflict with Cerdic (in a reprisal from Recruit) leads to the battle of Badon Hill, a traditional element within Arthurian fiction.
3) The return of Modred to her life and their continued rivalry and the revenge Lin wants for past issues.
Seen this way, I could easily say that the most important plot is 3. The others can be worked in as sub-plots. And thanks to some brainstorming the other day with my best friend, I wrote a sketch of a scene of that moment when Modred returns to Lin’s life. Lin’s reaction isn’t what I expected.
It’s a small step, but a start just the same!
Thanks for stopping by.
