New Reviews:
In April, Joyfully Reviewed had great things to say about Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover and A Midsummer Night’s Delights. Here are a few excerpts:
“My first thought after finishing Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover was “what a fun story.” Kelli A. Wilkins has spun a fast, entertaining, deliciously wicked tale that was wonderfully satisfying. What makes Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover somewhat unusual is that the story is written in the first person, entirely from the hero’s point of view. Cassie and Brian were perfectly balanced, matching one another in sweetness, strength, and sexuality. In the end, I was delighted by Confessions of a Vampire’s Lover. It’s fascinating and sensual with two immensely likeable protagonists. I am fast becoming a fan of Ms. Wilkins’s stories and look forward to reading more of her work in the future.” The link to the review is:

“There aren’t enough fans in the world to cool off after reading A Midsummer Night’s Delights. Kelli A. Wilkins has delivered what is perhaps one of the hottest historical romances I’ve ever read. A Midsummer Night’s Delights is definitely not for the faint of heart. Vincent and Sabrina don’t hold back in their games and tutelage, and they don’t allow Annabelle or Julian to hold back either. Ms. Wilkins pens a deliciously wicked tale that is fresh, fun, and wholly delightful.” The link to the review is:

Coffeetime Romance recently reviewed Kelli’s anthology, Naughty Nobles. Here’s an excerpt:
“The combination of these three erotic tales is awe-inspiring. Individually the stories are hot, but together they are scorching. Each story is unique in content but tied together by the sexual needs of each character and the means they will go to in order to reach fulfillment. The author has an outstanding grasp of the idea that when it comes to sexual gratification, there should be no limits. This is an excellent read for anyone wishing to explore the fiery side of love.” The link to the review is:

Romance at Heart had this to say about Naughty Nobles:
“Naughty Nobles is a trio of racy and erotic novellas that will entertain you and keep you guessing. The travels these three pairs of mismatched lovers have to take to reach true love are convoluted, erotic, and yet necessary. No one promised the road would be smooth, but with these couples, there are necessary lessons to be learned by one or both as to the nature of live, love, sex, and true friendship. All of these can ultimately lead to a strong bond, the beginning of love that will be unbroken. Join Dalton and Elara, Julian and Annabelle, and Sebestyen and Katarina as they learn the ropes, and fall in love. This collection is available in paperback from Amber Quill Press' Amber Heat Imprint in paperback format only. Stop over and get a copy of today. It is delightfully naughty reading!” The link is: http://romanceatheart.com/review/naughtynobles.html

Q&A WITH KELLI
Since everybody needs a break, even when doing something they love, how do you like to spend your time away from writing?
When I take a break from writing I usually hang out with friends and family, go for walks, or read. (As a rule, I don’t read when I ‘m writing - and I don’t write when I’m reading.) Other than that, I like to travel, go to flea markets, and garden.

What does your working space look like?
My writing space has lots of papers piled all over. I make folders for all of my books and story ideas, and I’m always scribbling down notes. I write all of my stories in longhand, so I have stacks of paper pretty much everywhere.

Any advice for aspiring authors?
My advice to aspiring writers is to take writing classes if you can and learn the basics of good storytelling (regardless of what genre you write). Join a critique group for feedback and enter contests when you’re ready – because you never know where they will lead you. I think all writers need to have thick skins, determination, perseverance, and patience when it comes to getting published. It’s a lot of hard work, but if you enjoy writing and creating stories, you’ll find joy in it.

FOR WRITERS:
Something to think about: In the last issue we learned how important it is for your characters to have goals. But what motivates them to reach their goals? What happens if they get lazy or slack off?

When writing a story it’s imperative that your character has a goal and a motivating factor to reach that goal. Ask yourself “what’s at stake?” for the character. What if he/she doesn’t reach the goal, then what happens? If the answer is “nothing, he just moves on” then you need to up the stakes and get your character motivated. A motivated character increases the action and drama in a story and it keeps the plot moving.

For a summertime example, let’s look at Jaws. The sheriff finds out that a shark’s been feeding off the tourists and townsfolk. His goals are to close the beaches and get rid of the shark. His motivation is two-fold (1) he’s the sheriff and it’s his job to protect people and (2) anyone (even his own kids) could be eaten at any second.

No matter what genre you’re writing, your characters need to be motivated and pushed along as they try to reach their goals – but remember some goals will never be reached and motivations can change or grow over the course of a story.

Just for fun:
Here are a few goals and motivating factors. Why not see what stories you can create to go with them?
Goal: to rob a bank – Motivation: to pay a kidnapper’s ransom
Goal: to run away to Alaska – Motivation: to escape from gangster/assassin
Goal: to solve a murder – Motivation: to prove the wrong man was convicted
Goal: to hike across a mountain – Motivation: to rescue a trapped family

Enjoy! Next issue we’ll make your characters’ lives miserable by adding conflict into the mix!

Happy Reading!
